Isla Holbox, Mexico: My Travel Log

Published on 8 April 2024 at 12:58

Have you heard about Isla Holbox in Mexico? Holbox Island is located in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. It is sitting on the northern part of Yucatan. Chiquila is a small town, where you would catch the ferry to get to the island. (It's only a 20-minute ferry ride)!

Kiteboarding

Getting ready for the kiteboarding lesson! All the gear and equipment were included in the kite boarding lesson that I took with another solo traveler from Seattle.

My very first time learning how to kiteboard! I think it went okay, I was being dragged around the kite all the time but still, it was fun. It looks straightforward from the outside, but when you actually start learning, things don't go as expected and it is not easy after all. Controlling the kite in water is hard, but it was a good learning experience. I hope to continue to learn kiteboarding next time when I see another school that offers lessons. I was lucky that I got paired with another solo traveler. It was a small group lesson (it was me, her & the instructor), which made it great for learning.

Restaurants, Bars, Cafe and the Market

You might think that there wouldn't be a lot of options to dine or eat out when in Holbox Island but that is not true!! The island itself is kept very private and has a lot of romantic/cute places to eat and drink. Good news!! There are also vegan options like vegan gelato or esquites & elotes (without cheese & cream), vegan poke bowl, etc., which made me feel happy. There is a small market (only two vendors) further west of the main street that opens early every day and they sell fruits and vegetables too. If you are looking for fresh fruits, I recommend going to the market instead of buying fruits from "fruterias" (they are stores that only sell fruits and vegetables) because they are pretty expensive!

Really cute bars/restaurants everywhere. I loved the nightlife in Holbox as the lights start to glow in the very dark night sky.

Catching Sunset

1) By the main street

One of the quickest and easiest ways to catch the sunset. It was a little past 7 pm when the sun started going down, so I was there 10 minutes early waiting for the sun to set with my camera ready.

Everyone waiting for the sun to set. It's a must-do thing when you are in Holbox.

2) Puntas Cocos

Located on the very west of the island and it was a 30-minute walk from the main street. If this seems far, take a taxi (there are ATV taxis here as the roads are not paved). You can wait by the street and grab empty ones. I decided to walk so that I could explore the west side of the island. It was a very quiet part of the island, but still very safe, and it was a perfect spot to catch the sunset. The beach was empty and I got to walk by the beach while enjoying the view!

It was the best way to wind down for the day!

I had a blast time in Holbox Island and highly recommend the island to anyone! You can easily get to the island from Cancun too, if you are flying into Mexico from Cancun Airport. Catch the ADO bus from Cancun Centro and stop by Chiquila to get your ferry ticket to Holbox. If you are traveling from Merida (the route I took), also take the ADO bus from Centro Merida to Chiquila. This is a true hidden gem and it's an island that is not touristy at all! I am sure you will have an amazing time!
