Cozumel, Mexico: Scuba Dive and Snorkeling Mecca

Cozumel is an island located on the east coast of Yucatan, where you can catch a ferry from Playa del Carmen to get there. It is a very popular place among scuba divers and snorkelers who love spending time underwater exploring life beneath the land.

Scuba Diving

I love scuba diving, although I haven't had a chance to dive deep for years but I was extremely happy to be able to get in the groove and explore what it's like to be underwater in Cozumel National Park. There are so many places in Cozumel National Park where people can go scuba diving, so it sure was one of the best places in the world to dive. All the people that I met on the boat out to the ocean from the dock were so friendly and welcoming. There was a couple from Virginia, mom & son from Germany, and some from Spain who shared the boat with me. The captain of the ferry was friendly too!

I did 2 full dives in 2 different reefs in Cozumel National Park.

1) San Clemente Reef: This was my favorite. The captain of the ferry dropped us off here first and I had so much fun experiencing the life underwater. I saw tons of cute fish and coral reefs. I loved seeing a school of fish that had black and white stripes like zebras (zebras are one of my favorite animals). We spent around 45 minutes underwater here.

- Lunch- We had a quick lunch break. The captain of the ferry prepared simple meals, like sandwiches and fruits. The pineapple and watermelon chunks were so good.

2) Paradiso: Our second location was also good, but I liked the first one more. This was a quick dive but it was still fun. We didn't see a lot of wildlife here though. Aida took a lot of videos and photos of me during both dives. My GoPro (it's Hero10) unfortunately didn't work (and is still not working properly) so I couldn't bring it with me to the adventure, which was a bummer. If I had it working, of course, I would have taken it with me and would have taken more videos and pics along the way, but I am still happy and thankful for what Aida has gotten for me.

Side note: GoPro issues- the battery dies too fast, and the front screen doesn't work. I am so sad that it's not working :'(

Getting ready for scuba diving. The ferry picked us up at the main dock.

The name of the ferry was "Gypsy!"

Selfie is a must :D

Diving in Cozumel was epic!

Snorkeling at Night

Have you ever snorkeled at night? I've only snorkeled during daytime when everything is visible, and I wanted to get a feel of what it's like to snorkel at night, so I decided to go on an adventure with Miri around 7:30 pm. We drove further south on the island and stopped by a shore to dive. Night times are special because some animals and fish are more active at night and are easier to detect when it's dark (such as squid, or octopus just to name a few). I hoped I could see either a squid or an octopus during my 1 hour snorkeling and guess what? I was able to see both of them. The squid was so cute and small. It had a glittering body and I had so much fun swimming with this fellow. An octopus was so small in size, but I saw it crawling by the reefs, which was amazing. There was a school of tiny fish too that I saw.

                               The beauty of night snorkeling!

It's the cutest squid ever!

My time in Cozumel flew by so fast, and I now miss my dives here. It is definitely a great place to dive and snorkel and would highly recommend it to anyone. I hope to come back and explore areas that I haven't dived. It was a very safe place to be in as a solo female traveler and walking around the island felt very safe.

** Uber here is very expensive in Cozumel. Highly recommend walking or taking local taxis. It's not hard to catch a local taxi. Renting a car or a motorcycle could be an option too. Tucuc/Tuktuk drivers try to only pick up locals and may deny travelers using their service as they are only providing cheaper rates to locals. They encourage travelers to grab a cab /taxi instead (at a slightly higher rate than tuktuks).
